CHAPTER 5
Comparing you to other people;
Or talking to you without looking at you in the eyes;
In spite of their “I get it” expression;
Everyone gets lost in love, isn’t it?
Even if popular doramas show things that make your heart race,
In order not to stop our hearts to beat,
We must not get drown in our breaths.

Even without saying a thing,
If we joined your feelings to mine,
We could get used to being a couple.

Ohno Satoshi hesitated before entering the store, asking himself for the thousandth time what was he doing there… The answer was as clear as before: he wanted to buy a CD and that was the best and most complete store he knew. It was as simple as that.

So why was he feeling that anxious?

Maybe because of the tense day he had at work, after having to depose in the case where he was being accused of misfeasance.

Maybe because, in the process, he nearly had a nervous breakdown in front of the Inner Affairs’ members for feeling himself being treated unfairly in face of the accusation.

Or maybe it was simply because all he managed to think about since released was to see the young attendant once again. Actually, since he discovered where he worked, he felt much more enthusiastic, a fact that even Sho had noticed.

— What? — Satoshi asked, a few minutes after they have left the store.

— Eh? — his friend pretended not to understand, paying attention to the traffic.

— Don’t play dumb, Sho. I know this cynical smile on your face quite well…

The psychologist bit his lower lip and drove in silence for a few seconds before stopping his car in a red light. Just then, he turned to his friend, his eyes full of curiosity.

— Ok, you’re right. Now tell me: was it just me or did I feel an awkward mood between you and that Ninomiya guy?

— It was you — Ohno answered, dryly.

— Oh, come on, Satoshi! — Sakurai groaned. — You don’t really believe I’m buying this, right? Come on, tell me: who is he? You’ve slept together, right?

— How did you…? — Ohno opened his mouth, astonished. Was it that obvious?

— Anyone could feel the sexual tension between the two of you… Come on, tell me. How long have you known him?

The police officer sighed, at first considering the idea of cutting off the subject. There wasn’t anything to tell, after all. However, knowing his friend, he realized he wouldn’t let it go until he had a satisfying answer.

— It’s not what you’re thinking, Sho-kun. He’s just a guy I met in a dancing club. We talked, then had some beer and went to a love hotel. When I woke up, he wasn’t there anymore.

— But…

Had he ever expressed how much he hated Sakurai’s perceptiveness? Especially when he started acting more as a psychologist than as a friend, making him say more than he intended.

— There’s no “but”.

—Satoshi...

— I’m being honest, Sho. I needed to vent on that night. I was annoyed, I had an argument with you and I was feeling defeated. So I’ve gone out for a drink… Yes, I confess that I intended to find someone to relieve my tension… I needed a distraction; do you know what I mean? So, he came up. I was lucky, he was… quite gentle and, I confess he made me curious towards him; those restless eyes, so piercing; his juvenile looks, as a rebel; his easy talk… But, it was nothing more than a one-night-stand. Until ten minutes ago, I didn’t even know his name.

— He knew yours, though.

Yes, he did. He was surprised when he heard him saying his name. It wasn’t that strange, however. When he woke up that morning, he found his wallet overturned. His first reaction was anger. He should have known better… another cheap scammer, stealing his partner after sex. Nonetheless, when he took it in order to calculate his loss, for his surprise, he found every ien inside it. Everything was in place, apart from his identity card, which was thrown on the floor.

He thought about that for a while. Had he regretted it? Had something happened to make him leave the room before completing his theft? A phone call maybe? Or had his only intention been to know who he was?

— I was surprised by this as well.

— Only by this? In my opinion, it’s clear that things between the two of you are not over…

— What do you mean?

— He seemed very happy to see you again.

— Do you think so? — he asked, too excitedly and too impulsively.

Sho only smiled, closing the matter and returning his attention to the traffic.

Bastard! He had always been like that: manipulating him and then, taking his leave. And he always managed to achieved his goal. He couldn’t deny that he thought about the attendant during those three days.

Although he wouldn’t admit it, he was dying to know if Sho was right about the lad’s reaction. However, it was much easier to convince himself that he needed to buy a CD. Not that it was a total lie; he actually wanted to buy the american group’s album he had asked him about. He liked the music straight away and he hadn’t even met Ninomiya when he first heard it.

He tried to keep a composed expression and entered the store, followed by a group of teenagers who might have just left school. He went straight to the foreign music session and it took him two minutes to find the CD he was looking for.

Nevertheless, he waited a little more to get to the counter. Ninomiya was busy, attending to the students, smiling a little too much… He wondered if it was a rule to all the store employees or if he was actually enjoying the girly flirtation.

Taking a turn, he searched for albums of bands he knew, not only international ones. He focused his attention on the release from a soul band he liked a lot.

— Do you need any help?

The sudden question surprised him.

— Oh, I’m just looking around…

— The critics said it was a great album. Personally, I don’t like it as much as their debut CD, but it’s really good, in spite of the guitar player’s change.

— Eh? Raiden left Spiral?

— It happened a while ago, Ohno-san… — the attendant smiled. — Haven’t you seen it in the news?

— It seems that I didn't… — he answered, a little embarrassed. Actually, for the last six years, he hadn't followed any events from the phonographic or television industry. Which was odd, considering that his old TV was kept turned on through the night in his living room, where he would rather sleep than his bedroom. He wouldn’t pay attention to the programs, though. The sole purpose of the imagens and the sounds that came from the device was to avoid his loneliness and the darkness of the night. — I’ve been a bit busy for some time now and always arrive at home so exhausted that I don’t really pay attention to the news of the entertainment world.

— I see.

Once again, he was seduced by the gaze that seemed to understand him so well.

— To make a long story short, — proceeded the attendant — Raiden disagreed with the band when the majority decided to change their label. Besides, he was already unhappy with the changes in the arrangements. He said they were losing their authenticity, introducing technological novelties to the classic style they had proposed in the beginning. Finally, he left Spiral and created a new band, Cosmos. Their album will be released in two weeks. If you want, I can reserve you one.

That last sentence; could it mean that Ninomiya would like to keep seeing him?

— I’d appreciate that. Raiden is one of my favorite guitar players...

— Really? — the youngster’s face brightened up. —  I have a guitar pick he gave me after a concert… It’s my favorite one in my collection!

— So you collect guitar picks? — the obvious question embarrassed him. Wasn’t it what the man had just told him? Ninomiya didn’t seem to be bothered, though.

— Yes. I play the guitar a bit… and, consequently, the electric guitar. Didn’t I mention in that night? — that time it was Ninomiya who blushed, as if that night was some kind of forbidden subject between them.

— Yes, you told me you played in your friend’s band, from time to time. Listen, Ninomiya-kun, is it okay for you to be here, talking to me? Shouldn’t you be attending in the counter?

— I’ve asked Rika-chan to stay in my place… — he informed. By his tone, Ohno realized he had misunderstood his question. — I saw you a little lost and thought you could use some help… But I can let you on your own, if you prefer.

— That’s not what I’m saying — he said, feeling inexplicably happy to know that Ninomiya had noticed him. — I was just worried, I don’t want to monopolize you with my doubts. The only certainty I had when I entered here was regarding The Neighborhood’s album.

— Have you changed your mind? You didn’t seem that interested that day…

— It wasn’t quite that. I was taking a ride with my friend, I didn’t want to hold him. I’ve always had the intention to buy it, though, that’s why I’ve returned. I’m taking these too, even if Raiden isn’t the guitar player anymore… Beside these, can you recommend me any others? It had been a while since I’ve updated my CD collection.

— What are you looking for exactly? International bands?

— Not necessarily. It can be national ones as well or solo singers, whatever you have in that style… — he pointed his head to the two CDs he was holding. — I don’t mind if the vocal is a man or a woman…

— I have a few suggestions. I think you will like them.

Helpfully, Ninomiya introduced him to some names. He heard the description attentively, as well as the story of the singers and even listened to some samples in the moments when the employee had to go and attend to the other customers. In the end, he spent almost an hour and a half in the store as well as a considerable amount in the exaggerated acquisition of 5 CDs, 3 DVDs and a new headphone.

— Thank you for using our services! Please, come back any time! — Ninomiya said, smiling, while handing him two plastic bags with the store’s brand on it.

In any similar situation, that was the moment when he would thank for the good service and leave the store satisfied with his purchases. However, before he noticed, he heard the sound of his own voice:

— Ninomiya-kun… what time does your shift end?

— Eight o’clock — he answered, seeming equally surprised.

“In three hours”, he thought, rounding the minutes after checking on his watch.

— Do you have anything scheduled? Would you like to have dinner with me? — he continued, as if his voice had a will of its own.

— I… I’m free, Ohno-san… But it’s quite some time for you to wait…

— Don’t worry about that. I have a few things to do around here; I believe I shall have finished it by the end your shift. Can I come back here to take you to eat something with me, then?

It took Ninomiya less than two seconds to answer.

— I’ll be waiting. I know some great places around… Unless you already have anything in mind…

— No. Whatever you choose will be fine for me.

— So, we see each other in three hours?

The police officer nodded, leaving the store with a relieved sigh. Why had he been so impulsive? And why was he feeling so accomplished by him accepting his invitation?

He looked around, anxiously, and wondered what would he do now to entertain himself for the next three hours.
